4 Mar 12: Maslenitsa in Newcastle, NSW
On Friday, 24 February, close to 100 people gathered in the parish hall of Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, in Wallsend, Newcastle, for an evening of festivity, folk tradition, and friendship. The parish Ladies Auxiliary, together with helpers from the wider Russian community in Newcastle, had cooked over 500 pancakes, and the tables were laden with herring, caviar, smoked salmon, sour cream and cottage cheese. 18 Nov 11: Announcement – Holy Kursk-Root Icon in Hornsby, Newcastle and Gosford – 19 November 2011
On Saturday 19 November 2011 the wonder-working Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God (Курская-Коренная икона Божией Матери «Знамение»), the Protectress of the Russian Diaspora, will visit Hornsby, Newcastle and Gosford. This icon, dating back to at least 1295, is one of the great holy icons of the Russian Orthodox Church. (more…)
18 Oct 09: Feast of the Protection of the Mother of God, Newcastle – October 13-14, 2009
For the parishioners of the church of Saint Nicholas in Wallsend (Newcastle), the feast of the Protection of the Mother of God was this year an occasion of greater significance than usual. This is because it was the sixtieth anniversary of the first patronal feast day of the Hunter Valley’s first Russian Orthodox Church, the Holy Protection Church at Greta Migrant Camp.
The Holy Protection Church at Greta functioned from the arrival in Australia in August 1949 of Archpriest John Lupish (+1977) until the closure of the camp some seven years later. It was, during that time, a refuge and a consolation for many Orthodox Christians who found themselves settled for a time in the camp, having come to begin a new life in Australia after the turmoil of the Second World War. This year, the parish of Saint Nicholas in Wallsend, an outer suburb of Newcastle, NSW, celebrated its patronal feast on Sunday May 24, the Sunday after the feast.
Two important occurrences made this year’s feast-day particularly memorable. The first was the visit of our beloved First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia, Metropolitan Hilarion. The second was the formal observance of the unification of a parish of the Moscow Patriarchate in Newcastle, the Theophany parish in Mayfield, with our parish in Wallsend. (more…)
