Ordination of a Deacon in Brisbane

On the Second Sunday of Great Lent, prior to the annual Pastoral Conference, Archbishop George celebrated the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at St Nicholas Cathedral, Brisbane.

 Clergy from Brisbane parishes concelebrated with His Eminence at the Divine Liturgy of St Basil the Great:

  • Mitred Archpriest Gabriel Makarov (Dean of St Nicholas);
  • Archpriest Vladimir Deduhin (retired);
  • Priest Andrew Smith (Rector of Holy Annunciation);
  • Priest Stephen David (Assistant Priest of Holy Annunciation);
  • Priest Boris Metlenko (Assistant Priest of St Nicholas);
  • Protodeacon Vladimir Bigdan (of Vladimir Icon);
  • Deacon Palladius van Zyl (of Holy Annunciation);
  • Deacon Rostislav Karipoff (of Vladimir Icon).

During the Sixth Hour, Luke and Nikita were tonsured as Readers and assigned to St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral.

After the Eucharistic Canon, Subdeacon Jeremy Morse was ordained to the diaconate, continuing to serve at Holy Annunciation Orthodox Church.
Regular parishioners of the Cathedral were joined by the congregation of Holy Annunciation, joyous at the ordination of one of their own.

During the time for Communion of Clergy, the Presanctified Lamb was prepared for the Lenten Pastoral Conference, which would be held a few days later.

Upon completion of the Liturgy, Archbishop George addressed the faithful with a sermon on St Gregory Palamas, whose memory we commemorated, connecting the previous Sunday’s ‘Triumph of Orthodoxy’ with this Sunday as a further example of a triumph of Orthodoxy, and calling all to repentance as foundation for the spiritual life.

Following the Divine Liturgy, Abp George congratulated the newly-ordained, commending their service in their respective parishes, and Pdcn Vladimir intoned the ‘Many Years.’

With Cathedral Hall being occupied with preparations for the Pastoral Conference, all were invited to a celebratory luncheon, held at a local community hall in honour of our ruling hierarch and the newly-ordained Fr Jeremy. Congratulatory speeches were offered by Fr Andrew, who welcomed his new co-labourer in the Lord’s vineyard, and asked all to keep Fr Jeremy and his family in their prayers; and by Fr Stephen, who led all in thanking His Eminence, St Nicholas Cathedral, the QRCC, and all the parishioners of Holy Annunciation who organised, contributed to, and ran a successful luncheon.

May God bless and preserve His newly-ordained servants, Deacon Jeremy, Reader Luke, and Reader Nikita, unto many years!
