On Monday, June 19, 2023, a former rector and builder of the new church in the Brisbane suburb of Rocklea, Archpriest Ruf Tobolov, reposed in the Lord. Ruf Georgievich Tobolov was born on April 21, 1940 in Ust-Urga, in the Three Rivers district, China. He was a descendant of the Transbaikal Cossacks.<\/p>\n

He with his family migrated to Australia in 1962 and after a period in the Bonnegilla migrant camp, the family settled in Sydney.<\/p>\n

In 1965, Ruf entered Holy Trinity Theological Seminary in Jordanville, USA. After completing his Bachelor of Theology degree in 1970, he returned to Australia where he worked in construction. In 1971, he married Ilaria Titova, daughter of the parish warden of the Mother of God of Joy of All Who Sorrow Parish in Geelong.<\/p>\n

He was ordained to the diaconate on March 11, 1973 by Bishop Konstantin (Jesensky) and appointed to serve in the parish of St. Seraphim of Sarov in Brisbane.<\/p>\n

On January 15, 1980, Metropolitan Philaret (Voznesensky) ordained him to the priesthood and he was appointed by Archbishop Theodosius (Putilin) as a cleric of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Woolloongabba and as a visiting priest of the Blessed Virgin of Vladimir parish in Rocklea.<\/p>\n

He was appointed rector of the Blessed Virgin of Vladimir parish in Rocklea on March 10, 1984 and began a program to build a new church to replace the old wooden church opened in 1956. The new church was built and later received its great consecration by the hand of Metropolitan Vitaly (Ustinov) on Saturday 25 December 1993 who was visiting Australia that year.<\/p>\n

In 1995, Father Ruf moved with his family to the village of Khmylovka in Primorsky Krai, Russia. Since 1995, he began to serve in the churches of the Southern Deanery of the Vladivostok diocese – in the villages of Livadia and Wrangel.<\/p>\n

He had the idea of restoring the church in Khmylovka. The parish rallied around the priest, and he subsequently became rector of the new Khmylovka Church of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God. He urged on the construction of a permanent church to replace the temporary building used by the parish. He remained rector there until 2010, when, for health reasons, he returned to Australia to retire.<\/p>\n

On June 19, 2023, he quietly passed away to the Lord after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his Matushka Ilaria, five children and many grandchildren.<\/p>\n

His funeral was held on Tuesday 4 July 2023, by His Grace Bishop George of Sydney, Australia and New Zealand, concelebrating with His Grace were: Archpriest Alexander Borodin, rector of Vladimir Icon parish Rocklea, along with other clergy of the Queensland Deanery: Archpriest Gabriel Makarov (Dean of Queensland), Archpriest Vladimir Deduhin, Archpriest Gabriel Lapardin, Archpriest John Weir, Priest Andrew Smith, Priest Alexander Paramonov, Protodeacon Gerald Polorotov, Protodeacon Vasily Konstantinidis and Deacon Matthew White, along with hundreds of worshippers.<\/p>\n

The magnificent and prayerful funeral service was preceded by a Parastas the night before, and a Divine Liturgy in the morning. Many of Fr Ruf\u2019s family members also kept vigil throughout the night prior to Liturgy, reading the Gospel continuously.<\/p>\n
