: On the 90th Anniversary of the Royal Martyrs – Essay Competition

During 2008 Russian people in the homeland and in the diaspora will be commemorating the

90th anniversary
of the martyrdom on July 4/17, 1918 of Tsar Nicholas II, his family and their faithful servants at Ekaterinburg and the martyrdom the next day July 5/18, 1918 of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth and her companions at Alapaeyevsk.

With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion,
the Diocese of Australia and New Zealand is appealing to its youth to participate in an essay competition about the Royal Martyrs.

The competition will be held in three categories:
Ages 11-13 (300 words max.)
Ages 14-17 (500 words min.)
Ages 18-25 (1000 words min.)

There will be three prizes in each category (prizes to be announced)

Choose one of the following topics:

1. The Romanov Royal Family, an example of service for faith and fatherland.
2. The Romanov Royal Family as an example of an Orthodox Christian family.
3. The Tsarevich Alexis as a model for children and teenagers.
4. The personal lives of the Grand Duchesses Olga, Maria, Tatiana and Anastasia.
5. The social work of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth.
6. Is the death of the Tsar and his family important for Russians today?

Essays may be written in Russian or English and winning entries will be published in Word of the Church and The Voice.
